This is how I "accidently" ran my first 3K (just the distance, not a formal event).

I would go on little trail running jags on my regular hikes here and there, slowly advancing with time and consistency.

I would check in with myself: "Do I feel ok? Is anything hurting? How's my breathing?" and if all was good, I'd go a little further.

And the day that I did it, all was good all the way home. That was Metal.
